Ocean’s 8 is set to arrive in cinemas on the 8th of June 2018 and could offer a whole new slant on the heist sub-genre…
The film’s star-studded all female cast includes Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna.
It will represent a comedic and all female reply to the Ocean’s series. It’s likely to be much more comedy-centric than the original Ocean’s 11 and early indications show little similarity between the two. George Clooney is involved though, as a producer alongside Steven Soderbergh.
The plot sees Danny Ocean’s (Clooney’s character from the previous films) estranged sister leads an attempted heist on New York’s Met Gala. It’s Bullock that takes on the role of Debbie Ocean.
Damien Lewis also notably features as Debbie’s ex and the film’s central villain. He’s also the victim of the planned heist.
Director Gary Ross is perhaps best known for directing and adapting The Hunger Games for the big screen. More recently though his directorship of The Free State of Jones told a true story immensely well and was complimented by Matthew McConaughey’s performance.
With an all-star cast and a director who shone last time out, (critically, if not at the box office,) Ocean’s 8 could be hugely enjoyable. It’s likely to be greeted with the same debate that the Ghostbusters remake saw though. Some fans seemed disproportionately annoyed at the introduction of an all-female spin-off and we may see a continuation of that debate come June.
