So what may ‘The Last Jedi’ be about?

Fans are scratching their heads… the internet is buzzing with comments… yet all we have to go on is Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi which is in fact not really anything at all. But we can begin to imagine what this film will entail and when we will know more.

So the name, The Last Jedi, what could this mean? Well cast your mind back to 2015 when we saw The Force Awakens and (if you haven’t seen it stop reading now) Luke Skywalker was found after an extensive search by Rey, the new female heroine of Star Wars who appears to have the force. In this moment there were two Jedi, so either the film title means Jedi in the plural sense as the last of their kind or that one will perish in this film. We can imagine this will have something to do with Kylo Ren who in this film is will be scared from his duel with Rey and stronger following tuition from the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke.

Will Kylo Ren ascend to the level of Darth Vader’s power, displayed magnificently in Rogue One?

We know for definite that Leia is in this film so whether the plan is to write out both Skywalkers it is hard to say, Carrie Fisher’s sad death will certainly factor hard in the future plot. With this in mind the film could feature the passing of two major characters, enabling Rey to become ‘The Last Jedi’. There is scope for significant crossover with The Revenge of the Sith if this idea of Jedi extinction is traced back to the end of the Clone Wars and the rise of Ren’s idol, Lord Vader.

Our review of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

However, all of this rides on speculation and a real deep knowledge of the lore around Star Wars. Depending on what one counts as canon this title could indicate anything from Jedi triumph, as in Return of the Jedi, or to a sinister turn against the heroes, following The Empire Strikes Back’s lead. You can even speculate on the fact the initial release had the title in red, an ominous sign of the Sith’s growing power?

Premiere Of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" - Red Carpet
Kathleen Kennedy, Star Wars Executive Producer, has hinted that the Spring Star Wars events may be when the trailer is released.

We shall leave speculation to the forums for now and await the trailer, possibly delayed to allow Rogue One: A Star Wars Story sufficient time. With the Superbowl only weeks away a trailer could come then or we may have to wait until Spring and for Rogue One to be out on DVD and Blu-Ray.
